My Writing: My sad yet happy story!
By Mary, Age 12, USA
April 2006

My Name's Mary and I were fully adopted when I was 3. I have 23 siblings and I was adopted by myself! I've only met 2 of my siblings josh and Nikki! My mom was a drug and alcoholic! My dad is in jail! I don't want to see them because well I'm happy! I live in a nice huge home and have many friends! I was put into many foster cares so I couldn't trust anyone! I was a horrible kid to my mom! I was just so scared! I am ok now I can trust her I don't think of her as my savor but as my mom! Who I love! I love my life now and can't wait for more! I love my life so don't feel bad my mom is a social worker and sees a lot worse! Thanks for listening! -Mary

My Writing: Feelings about being adopted
By Melissa, Age 9, Illinois, USA
April 2006

My mom always said to me that being adopted is not bad, but it's hard to believe it's true if people tease you about it but it's not. I'm tan and family is white. It's more noticeable because we're different colors. People say that my birth parents didn't want me, but really they just couldn't take care of me. If they could have, they would have.

Your parents love you just as much as if you weren't adopted. So don't listen to what other people say, they just don't understand. Just walk away with your head up knowing they're wrong and don't say anything to them.

How I was adopted
When I was born, my birth mother and my birth father were having trouble taking care of my two older brothers. When it came time for me to go home with someone, I couldn't go home with my birth mother. My great aunt and uncle agreed to take me home and let me live with them. After nine months, my birth mother asked them to adopt me. My birth mother was trying to make things better in her life and I was very happy with my soon to be adoptive parents. She must have loved me very much to do what was best for me. When I was 22 months old, my adoption was final. I didn't know the difference because Mom and Dad have always been Mom and Dad to me.

How I was adopted

It may be hard at first when you find out that you were adopted you may wonder if you were adopted I know because I found out when I was little.

My Writing: About Adoption
By Brazilia, Age 16, Florida, USA

BEING ADOPTED IS NOT THE BEST THING IN THE WORLD. THINGS HAPPEN THAT WOULD NEVER HAPPEN IF YOU WERE WITH YOUR PARENTS IN THE FIRST PLACE. I WAS ADOPTED FOR 2 1/2 YEARS AND MY LIFE WAS NOT GOOD. I WISH I WOULD HAVE NEVER GOT ADOPTED. I ALSO HAD TWO MOTHERS THAT IS WHAT THEY WANTED ME TO BELIEVE BUT NOW I AM BACK IN THE SYSTEM AND I AM HAPPY.

Person: What is your real name?
Me: I would tell you but the fact I have two might make your brain explode and killing people is frowned upon in many countries.

POEM
My Writing: Abandoned
Becky, Age 11 USA

A girl of 13
Lived as a foster
And never knew the real world life
Home after home
Family after family
And yet she continued
To a new foster till she was wanted
She began to think that she'd die
Old and unwanted
She had manners and love to give
But no one accepted and she was scolded
But as she was thrown deeper into the pit
A loving hand grabbed her out
And as she was taken with love
She'd found freedom with hope
And family
A girl born as a foster
Found a home forever

My Writing: It is okay to be adopted
Kenzie, Age 13, Utah, USA

My family adopted my brother in 2003. We love him dearly and it is just like my mom gave birth to him her self. He even looks like us and people don't know that he is adopted unless we tell him!! It is okay that we adopted my brother!

I love being adopted! At first I was not quite sure if I wanted to be brought up in a new family! I really enjoyed it now and love the family.

My Writing: My adoption quote & People like me
By Kathryn, Age 14, Pennsylvania

Adoption is really special because you were wanted, and picked to be in your family. If I could change one thing about adoption, it would be knowing more about your birth family. Being adopted is good and bad because you were wanted, but it can be hard to do projects and answer questions at school.

People like me
In my family, nobody else is adopted. So I get pretty lonely and left out at times. But after I went to the Romanian Embassy for adopted kids, I met all these other children from Romania just like me. It was really a great experience because I have never known other adoptees from Romania. I met a girl there named Claudia who just came from Romania 1 year ago. She ended up living 5 minutes away... when the embassy was in Washington DC. It was really cool. Now we are best friends and we share something in common.... adopted from Romania. It is really cool and I am so lucky to have met her. I wish I could have other adopted brothers or sisters like me, but at least I have Claudia and all her brothers and sisters who are adopted too.

Some kids like to write letters to their birth parents, even though they can't send them. In the letters, they write the questions they would like to ask, tell them their feelings about being adopted, or let them know things turned out O.K.
