Dear Kids:

Thank you for sharing your thoughts about your adoptive parents with us. Almost half (43%) said your parents know how you feel. Another 43% of you said your parents understand you a little.

Here are some of the things you said:

My Parents Don’t Have a Clue About…
That I think about adoption every day.

Who my mom is. They don’t know how much I miss my real family.

They don’t know that I want to meet my biological family.

They were never adopted and they don’t know what I’m going through.

I lie about where I come from to avoid questions.

I don’t like to be adopted because everyone says, “Is that your real mommy?”

How much I want to see my birth parents.

I don’t like it when they tell others that I was adopted.

What to tell me about my birth parents—not that they know much.

I Wish My Parents Knew…
Where my birth mother lives.

I miss my biological mom and dad. I wish I could have my “real” sister here with me.

That I want to know my biological brothers.

About my birth parents and know how I feel sometimes.

Where my birth parents are now. If they are alive and what their characters or traits are.

I wish I know more about my birth dad.

I don’t like to be adopted because everyone says, “Is that your real mommy?” That is a little bit annoying.

How I feel about adoption.

My birth parents names.

Their names would be nice.

Here are some other things you told us…

I think adoption is very cool because it gives a child a chance to live and it is a lot betterthan throwing them out on the street.

I want to adopt 25 kids and have a group home for them. They will all be adopted when they’re infants. I have high hopes of making a LOT of kids happy to be adopted by me.

When your parents don’t have a clue about how it feels to be adopted, your feelings are still important. Here’s an idea to try:

Talk to another adult about your feelings. You might want to talk to your camp counselor, scout leader, teacher, religious school teacher, coach, or librarian. They will probably know someone else who was adopted besides you.
