Your Opinion Counts - More Ideas

When your parents don’t have a clue about how it feels to be adopted, your feelings are still important. Here are some ideas to try:
  • Talk to your sister, brother, or friend. Even if they can’t answer your questions, you’ll feel better when someone knows what’s on your mind. Then both of you could try talking to your parents. Sometimes that’s easier when another kid is part of the conversation.

  • Write about your feelings. You could write a letter to your parents or just make a list of all your questions. Some kids like to write a letter to their birth parents, even if they can’t send it to them. One place that you can send what you write is Adoption Clubhouse. Find out how.

  • Read a book from the Clubhouse Library about someone else who was adopted. You might discover that the main character has feelings like yours. Sometimes it’s easier to start a conversation talking about a book than about your own feelings.

  • Try making art to express your feelings, if reading and writing aren’t your favorite activities. Send a drawing, painting, or photo that you made to Adoption Clubhouse. It might be easier to talk about your artwork when your parents see it on the web site.

  • Talk to your parents. Try telling them one thing you think about that you want them to know. Sometimes parents are good listeners. Yours may surprise you.
In our recent Adoption Clubhouse survey, 86% of kids said their parents know how they feel or at least understand them a little.
