Alonzo Mourning

Alonzo Mourning

Alonzo, also called “Zo”, was born in Chesapeake, Virginia on February 8, 1970. His parents decided to separate, and eventually get a divorce, when he was only 10 years old. Alonzo chose to live in the foster home of a family friend rather than choose one parent over the other. His parents’ divorce really hurt Alonzo, but he was able to find love and support in his foster mother, Fannie Threet, and her family. Fannie and her husband gave birth to two children, but throughout time have adopted 11 children and provided a foster home for more than 200 children.

At only 12 years old, Alonzo Mourning was already 6 feet tall. He soon discovered the game of basketball and although he began out very clumsy, he was determined to get good at the game. Alonzo spent every day on the basketball courts practicing and it paid off for him. In the 11th grade, Sports Illustrated voted Alonzo the best 11th grade player in the United States.

Although not legally* adopted by Mrs. Threet, Alonzo calls Fannie “Mom” and credits her for helping him stay focused on basketball and schoolwork. After living with Fannie for eight years, Alonzo went to Georgetown University where his basketball game continued to bring him awards. In 1992, Alonzo was drafted as the second overall pick into the NBA by the Charlotte Hornets. After playing with the Hornets for two successful years, Mourning was involved in a trade that brought him to the Miami Heat. Throughout his entire career, Alonzo has achieved so much, including NBA Defensive Player of the Year, NBA All-Star team member, NBA All-Rookie First Team, NBA Championship. He has also played in the Olympics.

In 2000, Alonzo was diagnosed with a serious kidney disease that required him to receive a kidney transplant. Even facing such a difficult health issue, Alonzo was determined to fight back against the disease and continue to play. Alonzo has often said that it was his foster mom Fannie that taught him the importance of dedication, hard work and giving back. When he’s not busy winning NBA championships, Alonzo spends a lot of his time trying to helping the lives of children in need.
