Speak Out

All young people have feelings and concerns that might be difficult to share, particularly those who are adopted. In order to provide an outlet for children to express their feelings through creative writing and art, Speak Out posts submissions that can be shared with the whole Adoption Clubhouse community. Through the publication of the works created by children, validation is given to the young artists and writers, as well as the site visitors who may have similar histories and thoughts.

Material for Speak Out is collected through online submission or via U.S. Mail, with follow-up from National Adoption Center staff. Parents/guardians are contacted to obtain permission for the posting of writings or pictures before any posting takes place.

Surveys in Speak Out allow for even greater input from children about their feelings regarding adoption or other areas of their lives. With the answers to these questions, insight is given to adults about the thoughts that may be lingering for their children, yet are not being discussed. This information provides a valuable service, expressing the wishes or concerns of children that may not be shared as freely within a family. The responses to survey questions also enable children to recognize the commonalities of their private concerns and wishes among their peers.
