John G. Roberts
John Glover Roberts, Jr. became the 17th Chief Justice of the United States Supreme Court on September 29, 2005. John was born in Buffalo, New York on January 27, 1955. When he was 8 years old and in the 2nd grade, his family moved to Long Beach, Indiana, where he grew up. John's family was Roman Catholic and he had three sisters, Kathy, Peggy and Barbara. John was the second oldest of the four children. John's father worked in a steel mill.
In high school, he was a serious student but was also involved in many other activities. He was captain of the school's football team. Some of his other activities were wrestling, choir, drama, working on the school newspaper, and serving on the student council. He graduated from La Lumiere High School in LaPorte, Indiana in 1973.
After high school, John went to Harvard University. During the summer he worked in a steel mill to earn money to pay for college. He graduated from Harvard in 1976 and from Harvard's law school in 1979. From high school through law school, he was always one of the best students in his class.
After he graduated, John first worked as a law clerk and then went into private practice. Later, he served as a judge on the U.S. Court of Appeals. During his law career, John argued 39 cases before the Supreme Court, and won 25 of them. President George W. Bush nominated him for Supreme Court Chief Justice, after the previous Chief Justice, William H. Rhenquist, passed away.
John married his wife Jane Sullivan Roberts, who is also a lawyer, in 1996. They have two children, Josephine, known as Josie, and Jack. Both children were adopted as infants. Use your favorite search engine or visit your library to learn more about John G. Roberts.
