"Hey Rachel!"
Kieran, age 10,
asks Rachel - “Do you feel upset?”
Kieran asked me a very good question.
This question, “do I feel upset”, can be interpreted in many different ways. The question could ask “do I feel upset that we adopted my brother”? In response to that question the answer would be no, I am not upset that my brother was adopted. In fact I feel completely the opposite. I feel blessed that my brother is a part of my life because without him, our family would not be complete. My brother has brought so much joy, love, and a sense of humor to my family and I couldn’t imagine my life without him.
I think that it doesn’t matter if you were adopted or biological. A family is when people care and love each other. Each family is made up differently. Some with one parent, some with two parents, some with aunts and uncles, some with grandparents, and some with siblings. It doesn’t matter what your family is made up of as long as you love and care for each other. That’s what a family means. They stick by you through the good times and the bad times.
There are two quotes that remind me of family. One is “the love of a family is life's greatest blessing”, which means that family is the most important thing in our lives. It is one of the very few things that we can count on to be there for us in our time of need.
The other quote is “other things may change us, but we start and end with family”. This means that throughout our lives we undergo many changes. But the one thing that stays constant is our family standing right beside us through whatever happens. So you see, I could never feel upset that my brother was adopted because he is a very special part of my life and a very special member of my family.
Questions about adoption are really important to me so please keep them coming and I will do my best to answer them. Remember, this site is for you! I look forward to hearing from all of you soon!
Rachel
